Beach and lagoon at Elements Boutique Resort and Spa Hideaway, Koh Samui, Thailand

This was the view from Elements Boutique Resort and Spa Hideaway, Koh Samui, Thailand this morning – the same calm, relaxed beach and lagoon view as every day before and during the current situation, which has some impact in major cities in Thailand, although less than you may imagine.  Guests at this and other resorts around Koh Samui are enjoying their holidays just as they did before Thailand hit the headlines.

The world’s media, in general, attract viewers and readers with drama, wherever that may be.  So, there is a vested interest in making a pretty calm situation in Bangkok, following the coup, appear very dramatic.  Images of soldiers on Bangkok’s streets attract a lot more viewers and readers than the image above on a news channel.  Equally, they have no interest in showing Bangkok’s sights devoid of tanks and soldiers.

So, let’s set the record a little straighter:  Thailand has had many a coup in my living memory and this one is much less dramatic than some.  There is a short term curfew in place in major cities and a limited military presence at major road junctions and points where protests might gather.  The curfew is expected to be lifted at some point this week – some indications are as soon as the next 24 hours – and this was simply a step to calm the situation in Bangkok, especially, and allow normal life to continue despite the change of government.

The curfew does not apply to tourists travelling to and from airports and you simply need to make sure that you always have with you the papers that you would need in any case.  When out and about in Bangkok, always make sure that you have your passport and details of your hotel with you.  Many people have noted that travelling around Bangkok is now actually a little easier than before.

However, we are assured by the owner of Elements Boutique Resort and Spa Hideaway that the situation on Koh Samui is very different:  no military presence and no curfew.  The military government have a vested interest in making sure that tourism continues to flourish in Thailand and that this premier vacation island continues to attract visitors as it has throughout the troubles that have affected small areas of Bangkok for some months.  The sun is shining, the sea is warm, the beaches on Koh Samui are some of the best in the world.  Elements Boutique Resort and Spa Hideaway is a resort to get away to and find peace from the noise and troubles of the world and this remains as strongly the case today.
